I watched my first episode of Glam God last week and must say it is a great show, I was pleasantly surprised! Now, guess how tickled I was when I heard Tiger Lily speak and detected the sweet melody of a Caribbean accent. I could not figure out which Island but I had to find out. It turns out that Tiger Lily is from the Cayman Islands with Jamaican roots that also extend to the UK. Talk about International flavor!

I love Tiger Lily’s style and confidence! She’s a fierce stylist who could easily be a model!

All contestants compete to win a chance to style an A-List celebrity and win a $100,000 grand prize. Good Luck!

WaMu Seized & Sold

Many from the Caribbean come to America with dreams of financial success and economic stability. All of the restaurants, auto mechanic shops, clothing stores, just to name a few are a testament to the realization of those dreams.  We often believe in the stability of the American banking system and use it as the primary place to store our wealth but it may be time to reevaluate that.

Yesterday, Washington Mutual was closed by the U.S Government making it the largest U.S Bank failure.  JP Morgan will now own WaMu, so we have one more monopoly to deal with, which is never a good thing for the end customer. However, it’s the Stock holders who are hardest hit as the stock dropped to .45 last night in after hours trading. So check you portfolio thoroughly.

You know that the insiders always know what’s coming before the public do, so if this stock is part of your portfolio please consult your advisers FAST and look at all of your options, read, read, read! It may be time to invest in something else, like gold or silver that doesn’t lose it’s value.

Usain Bolt: World’s Fastest Man on Letterman Show

On September 24, 2008 Usain “Lightning” Bolt appeared on the David Letterman Show in New York City.  The 3 time Olympic Gold medal winner was charismatic, funny and natural in front of the camera.  David Letterman asked many questions about the Track Star’s training regiment; his reception upon going home to Jamaica and “Were you born this fast?” This interview will make you proud to be Caribbean!

I have also included the Usain Bold Victory Lap Documentary put out by PUMA International below because it does a good job of highlighting Jamaica’s pride in their 22 year old “golden son.” In it we see his father and the community talking about what these wins mean. Enjoy!

As a kick-off to the Labour Day Caribbean festivities in Brooklyn this year. I used to live in NYC for a few years and never heard about this event. I plan to be there next year ‘God willing!’

KEVON CARTER: Smooth Soca Sounds

Vodpod videos no longer available.
Kevon Carter has a smooth soulful sound that blends well with his style of Soca and it just makes you feel good. He is definitely one to watch! If this video is any indication, I predict a lot of good things coming from Kevon Carter in the near future. I am trying to get my hands on what is now my favorite song- “Can’t Forget” as soon as I do I’ll post it for your listening pleasure. I hope he makes a video soon but in the mean time check it out on his myspace page:   http://www.myspace.com/simplymusic

2008 TALLAFESTA: Costumes Still Available

I have the Carnival Bug- do you? I guess it’s because my little cousin is bringing a section for Miami Carnival this year and I so want to be a part of it! She told me that she sold out! She has 55 participants this year and I am sure it will be a sunning section. (Scroll down to see her costumes and sign up if you want to play mas in Miami)

If you want to runaway and play mas, (see the definition in a previous post if you don’t know what I’m talking about) head to Florida for Tallahassee’s International festival, it’s fast approaching! From what I see they have 4 sections and although the Blue and Green sections are sold out the Purple and Red are still available.

The cost is between $65-$85 and I really like the purple costume but judge for yourself below.

When Parenting Goes Wrong

Parents from the Caribbean often come to America to better themselves and uplift their families. I know that was the case for my Grandmother.

Caribbean parents I want to personally “Big You Up” for all you attempt to accomplish, sometimes working multiple jobs while attending school and still taking care of home.

So I caution you to know your children’s friends. Know the outside influences on them because although you teach them to say “good day” and respect for their elders other families in America don’t necessarily have your values.  You will hear a possible parent or older relative coaching the girls while operating the video camera. What was she thinking?
